Asus ROG G701VI-XS72K Use Case Review

The ROG G701VI-XS72K is one of the most beautiful looking gaming laptops you’ll find. The G701 series of laptops has always been Asus’s top range gaming notebooks and you certainly pay for it at $3000 for this specific variant.

The notebook is covered in a beautiful silver shroud with dark orange accents surrounding the center of the rear exhaust ports and back of the notebook display itself. The laptop fits perfect at home or at LAN parties or any place that isn’t commercial. If you plan on using this at your workplace, it will stick out like a sore thumb. Probably not the laptop for you if you need a portable computer at your work.

Since this laptop is designed more towards the Desktop Replacement category than being a normal laptop, you will certainly not be lacking in USB connections and display outputs.

On the left side we have:
2 USB 3.0 (Type-A)
1 Mic and 1 Headphone jack
SD Card Reader

On the right side:
Ethernet port
2 USB 3.1 Type C
1 Mini DP output and 1 HDMI Output
1 USB 3.0

Overall, it has plenty of connections to allow you to turn this machine into a battlestation. The USB type-C ports alone can handle several USB hubs to give you almost unlimited USB support. The display outputs also have full 4k 60hz support if needed. Overall, a great option if you need to use your laptop with external keyboards, mic, monitors etc etc.

This laptop is no slouch, with a core i7 quad core hyperthreaded CPU and 32GBs of RAM. You can do almost anything with this machine.

Video Editing: Will be an absolute breeze. You should not encounter any problems lagging around the timeline unless your editing videos above 4k resolution. Render times should be quite quick aswell, especially if your video editior supports CUDA which will allow it to use both your CPU and your GTX 1080 to process your videos.

Photo Editing: Photoshop, Gimp, or whatever you use will be incredibly quick. You can have layers upon layers of layers open at any given time for several images all open at once.

Gaming: Without question, this laptop is made for high end gaming. With a full fat GeForce GTX 1080 (this is not a mobile part), expect 100+fps in any game at the laptops native 1080P resolution with ultra quality presets enabled. The 1080 is quite overpowered for such a small resolution as 1080P, so if you plan on buying an external monitor for this machine, you can easilly use a 1440P or even 4K monitor to game on.

Web Browsing: With 32GB of memory, you have pretty much an unlimited amount of tabs you can leave open. So if your worried your computer will lag or crash with 30+ tabs of chrome open, don’t, it will never happen. Have as many as you want open.

Battery life & Weight:

The battery life is quite bad, but not surprising due to the fact that it has very power hungry components. Max battery life ranges around 3 Hours & 20 Minutes for just casual web browsing (according to LaptopMag). Gaming on the machine will drain the battery in more than half that time. Again however, this laptop is designed more towards the desktop replacement role with how heavy it is (8 lbs), so if you plan on using this at a desk, there is a good chance a wall outlet is always nearby.

Overall, the ROG G701VI-XS72K an excellent laptop all around. Even though you pay quite a bit, you get your money’s worth out of it. The performance of this laptop rivals even similarly priced desktop machines. It is indeed the “jack of all trades” in any use case you so desire to use this, whether it’s video editing, gaming, photo editing, or just plain and simply are a power user, this is the laptop for you.
